With everything happening in the automotive world, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of a new series in the making, the American Touring Car Championship, which most people who have watched anything touring car coming from overseas have wished for for a very long time. The series is being sanctioned by the United States Endurance Racing Association (USERA) and will be formatted much like European championships with 2 sprint races per weekend, standing starts, and teams will race under the flags of their home states.
Designed with cost containment for teams in mind, existing cars built to near-stock rules, including cars built to SCCA T3, Koni Challenge and FIA S2000 rules, are classified for this exciting new championship. The series will have open rules for things such as tires, brake pads and shock vendors which will allow teams to leverage existing vendor relationships for the new series.
According to the ATCC website, the schedule for 2009 will be announced in the coming weeks.
